Sleep Apnea Treatment

Manhattan Beach, El Segundo, and Southbay

Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) devices, which use a mask connected to an air circulator, have long been the standard for sleep apnea treatment. Unfortunately, many patients find the machines uncomfortable or claustrophobic and discontinue their use before their sleep apnea can be effectively treated.

Manhattan Beach orthodontist Dr. JD Miller is pleased to offer patients comfortable and effective alternatives to CPAP. If you or a loved one suffers from chronic snoring or other symptoms of sleep apnea, please call Surfside Smiles at 310-947-1810 to schedule your complimentary consultation and learn if an oral appliance can help you restore regular, restful sleep.

CPAP vs. Orthodontic Devices

CPAP requires a patient to wear a mask over the nose and mouth during sleep. Through an air tube, this mask is linked to a machine that circulates oxygen to allow you to maintain a continuous airflow as you sleep.

While CPAP can be effective for those who stick with treatment, most patients have difficulty acclimating to the mask and machine. More than half of patients who begin CPAP do not follow through on its long-term use, which is necessary to treat sleep apnea and diminish the risk of related health complications.

An increasing number of sleep apnea patients, however, are finding success with orthotic devices. These appliances, which are custom made for your unique bite, are similar to sports mouthguards. They fit snugly and comfortably over your teeth and are worn during sleep to keep your airflow unobstructed.

Types of Sleep Apnea Appliances

The right sleep apnea treatment for you depends on a number of individual factors, including the source and severity of your disorder as well as the physical structure of your mouth. Dr. Miller offers oral appliances including:

  • Silent Nite
  • TAP I
  • TAP II
  • TAP III

Some sleep apnea appliances are intended to prevent your tongue from blocking your airway while you sleep; others help stabilize your jaw position and promote an optimal airflow. Your thorough exam with Dr. Miller will determine the best treatment for your unique needs.
