How Lingual Braces Work
Lingual braces bring your teeth into alignment with the same principle as conventional braces, and they feature a comparable design that uses brackets and archwires.
Lingual braces differ from standard braces in their brackets and placement. Each bracket in lingual braces is custom crafted to fit the corresponding tooth, and the brackets are smaller than those used in traditional braces. The brackets are fitted to the rear side of your teeth, which conceals them for subtle teeth straightening.
Like conventional braces, lingual braces may be used on the upper and lower teeth. Lingual braces also utilize archwires that progressively apply the light force necessary to shift your teeth into optimal alignment based on your treatment plan. Although orthodontic treatment durations vary based on individual conditions, lingual braces generally achieve the desired results within the same time frame as regular braces.
Treatable Cases
Lingual braces may be used to treat a wide range of bite conditions (malocclusions) and teeth-spacing problems including:
- Crossbite
- Open bite
- Overbite
- Underbite
- Crooked teeth
- Crowded teeth
- Gapped teeth
- Misspaced teeth
Lingual braces are often an ideal choice for athletes and those who play wind instruments, because the brackets have no contact with the inner cheeks and lips.
