Types of Braces
At Surfside Smiles, we offer a variety of orthodontic treatments that include Invisalign as well as the following forms of braces:
- Conventional braces
- Lingual braces
- Self-ligating braces (Empower® and The Damon System®)
Although braces differ in appearance and placement, they employ similar concepts and components to straighten teeth.
Braces Basics
Orthodontic braces use brackets that are bonded to your teeth and fitted with archwires that control the selective force used to bring your teeth into the desired position. Brackets among the varying types of braces differ in size and placement (for example, the brackets in lingual braces relatively tiny and are placed on the back sides of the teeth).
The type of braces also impacts how often adjustments are necessary. Your adjustment sessions allow Dr. Miller to alter the applied tension of the archwires based on your individual treatment plan. Conventional braces and lingual braces typically require brief office visits every two to four weeks while self-ligating braces generally require fewer office visits.
Prior to the placement of braces, some patients require spacers. Spacers are tiny inserts that spread the teeth enough to provide optimal space to affix the brackets and thread the archwires.
Treatment time with braces will vary based on individual factors including the nature and severity of your bite condition. Most patients are able to complete treatment within 12 to 24 months.
